Our Quest to Make the Perfect Keto BBQ Sauce



Keto Primo Oh So Sweet Super BBQ sauce was the first condiment developed in our home kitchen.  Emily’s husband has experience as a butcher, for a fine dining steak house specializing in prime and Wagyu beef. He has traveled to source beef and pork directly from ranches in Nebraska, California, Idaho and Oregon.  At home, the family has been smoking, barbecuing and grilling meats, and developing BBQ sauces for years.  

When developing Keto Primo Oh So Sweet Super BBQ Sauce, a major goal was to create an end flavor and consistency that could be used as a marinade or glaze and finishing sauce or dip for cooking.  It had to have the proper texture and cook like a barbeque sauce. We also wanted to create a basic flavor profile that would appeal to a broad variety of people.

Creating our traditional barbeque flavor was a challenge.  While we had to make the sauce compliant with strict requirements of the Ketogenic diet, we had to eliminate many of the ingredients that make a classic barbeque sauce:  ketchup, corn syrup, brown sugar, molasses, soy sauce, and any kind of artificial colors. We also excluded many of the unhealthy artificial sweeteners found in most commercial “sugar-free” barbeque sauces, such as sucralose.  We had to substitute and replicate all of the key components that make the flavor profile of a traditional barbeque sauce. It was critical to preserve the ratios of vinegar, water and tomato base. We experimented with different Keto approved sweeteners to determine that  monk fruit sweetener was the best fit. In addition to monk fruit which is a known super food, we intentionally selected the ideal Keto ingredients, such as Apple Cider Vinegar, Pink Himalayan Salt, and Butter. We had to be able to produce the same high quality sauce consistently. All of this took trial, error and commitment.

The next step was to reproduce the barbeque sauce in production scale quantities, while preserving the quality of the original.  Manufacturing a BBQ sauce sweetened with monk fruit was a completely custom project, never done before. Keto Primo partnered with a gourmet sauce manufacturer who shares the same commitment to quality.  It took nearly a year of collaboration with the manufacturer’s R&D department to get it “exactly right”. What you taste from the bottle is exactly what a homemade batch from our family kitchen tastes like.
